Callan Bond’s review:
An ok prison-escape flick which uses a fractured narrative to provide an interesting take: it intercuts the escape-in-progress with events leading up to it. You then get the odd 'surprise' in the pre-escape events that cause you to re-evaluate some of the things you have already seen happen in the escape itself.
However, for a prison-escape flick there is a distinct lack of tension. The nature of the fractured narrative is partly to blame here, but there also isn't really a strong villain or many scenes where the guards seem to be simply one step from finding the whole thing out. I also didn't really latch onto any of the characters, and this also helps diminish how much you want to see them escape.
Not a bad movie, but it doesn't hold a candle to Escape From Alcatraz, the king of prison break flicks.
