Love Lies Bleeding 2024
Noir is literally built around heightened emotion and aesthetics to justify the ruinous decisions each character makes but Rose Glass takes a different tack than the genre’s typical fatalism and builds one around frenzied lust, love so all-encompassing it destroys as much as it creates and she follows that path to its logical conclusion and…then some. A mad delight. Stewart, O’Brien and Harris are aces.

Snake Eyes 1998
The camera as a bulwark against military overreach. It may rob us of our privacy but it can also speak truth to power. The last time a studio film released in the summer could spit blood on the DoD.

The Long Goodbye 1973
Robert Altman creates post-noir, using one of the genre's founding fathers in Raymond Chandler to blow out the plot and slow down the hyper-realism the genre's known for to examine the early-70's L.A. haze. No movie stars to be found, everybody's drunk, high, displaced, using different names, reducing Los Angeles' false glory to novelty impressions. As a result, much like Gould's interpretation of Phillip Marlowe as a mumbling, rumpled Seamus with his own brand of cool, feels tossed-off yet perfectly orchestrated.
