Abner Hofstadler’s review:
What can I say? This film was an utter surprise to me, I have heard mummers over the last couple of years since it was released saying that it was surprising and had an inventive and entertaining storyline but from glancing the trailer and poster I just assumed it to be a typical kids animated feature much like Despicable Me where it be good just not unforgettable.
Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs was indeed however, a true spectacle. The idea was incredible but this wasn't what made it so good. From the moment it starts up you fall in love with the lead character as we watch him grow up with his failed inventions (which ultimately help him out in the long run and save his life) from spray on shoes to "ratbirds" the film is fresh and inventive and the animation is clever not going for the typical 'lets see how realistic we can get this shit' that we seem to see oh too often of late and instead opting for a more cartoony approach which really fits with the story and theme.
Watching the film was like living in a dream world itself and from start to finish I couldn't get enough! The voice artistry was outstanding with treats such as Adam Sandberg and Mr T.
However, overall, it wasn't all this that made it so memorable. It's the sheer wit and humour this film offers on so many levels... it has classic kid elements of humour with your spastic action but then also has some great one liners and truly funny moments that at first take you by surprise but each time get better. From the funny reaction faces gawping up at the sky when the burgers rain to 'lets rock his car back and forth' in the closing stages... The humour made this film what it is.
Definitely worth seeing and I urge everyone not to make the same mistake as me in putting it off and discarding it into a bin of 'kids trash film' because it is so much more than that!
I love this movie. Hugely under-rated.
