Horton Hears a Who! 2008 ★★★★

Watched Aug 01, 2012

After watching The Lorax earlier this week I was inspired somewhat to go back and watch this previous Seuss animation as I chose to bypass it originally as I had with many animations since 'Shrek 2' (Apart from the Pixars).

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The stars cast (Carrey and Carell) strike up that working relationship they had in Bruce Almighty to bring the characters of Horton and the Mayor of Whosville to life and this certainly did not disappoint. Your standard mixture of slapstick comedy with one liners (not rude) that will make the adults laugh and a story that will melt everyone's hearts while watching with two parallel stories of belief in one another running alongside each other.

Where I would not give it that extra half star to par it with The Lorax or maybe Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs I think this film just needed some songs, the noise making at the end was I felt very well done and brought Carell's family back together and made his son feel worth his father's love but I can't help but feel a few more snippets of song would have brought the world of Seuss alive once more. Horton and the Mayor breaking into "I Can't Fight This Feeling" was a real treat for the end and gave me a belly ache from laughing - I have to stress how much I am enjoying these kinds of films right now...

If anyone has some non-pixar animations from the 00's that they think are gems pleeeeeeease give me a comment below so I can give them a watch!!!

  • If you're looking for non-PIXAR/Disney CG animated films, I'd suggest "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" and "Megamind." There's also "How to Train Your Dragon," "Rio," and "Rango."

  • I'd vote for all of those as excellent, apart from Rio, that was good, but to great for me. Rango is undoubtedly my favourite, great vocals from Johnny Depp and I love the rip on the Man With No Name trilogy.

Also Despicable Me, and one of the Ice Ages (any one, they're all very similar!).

  • @Travis I've seen ALL of them before and loved them too, my obsession with animations has built over the last few moths I think from watching these.... Only one I haven't seen is Rio.
@MArk Rango was brilliant I saw it in 3D and loved it so different to much else!

  • There's always the Madagasar series too, which, aside from the third film, I haven't seen.

  • How could I forget Kung Fu Panda??? Also check out Coraline if you haven't seen it...

  • I've been so warey of Kung Fu Panda just because it does look a little.... I dunno, poo I suppose, but I might well give it a watch! Coraline is amazing!

  • "ParaNorman" (I saw and reviewed it on Friday) is fantastic if you're still looking for recommendations!

  • I'm always looking Travis but the cinemas near me don't appear to be showing it and I was REALLY looking forward to it!! Really am hoping Hotel Transylvania will be shown!
