I have been looking forward to seeing Seeking a Friend for quite some time since seeing the first trailer about 8 months ago. Steve Carell has grown on me over the year so much I decided to watch every one of his films and when i read this synopsis on imdb not only did it have the classic storyline of 'after steve carell's wife/girlfriend leaves him...' but it also included a great twist of the inevitable end of the world.
Now going into this I knew from the outset this was going to be more drama/romance with comedy rather than comedy with some romance like Carell's previous films have been. I liked this fact and the storyline gets moving early on with no waiting around. Carell plays his typical role of a bit of a loser/loner/nerd and the addition of Knightley to the story was a great call and she acted particularly well and was essential to the success in my eyes.
I mean, the story was predictable right down to the inevitability of the pair being together as lovers by the end of the film rather than with their original plans. The last 15 minutes of the film was tear-jerking to say the least as they do indeed see the end of the world through together and I nice throwback to the start of the film to see how Dodge had evolved as a character through the film and learnt from Penny and finally asks her about her life story and keeps her calm as they draw to the end.
A brilliant rom-com/road-trip that will really bring a tear to your eye even though you know pretty much exactly what will happen in the main story it is just the bits in between you don't know about and watching the characters' relationship grow was touching while all the while knowing how they would end.
