Insidious starts interesting and goes well for a while (around half the film), then crashes and becomes a wreck. While it goes well, it works: the atmosphere is good, there is a sense of mystery, and the gas mask scene was genuinely creepy. Unfortunately the general plot of Insidious doesn't hold up, and I just couldn't take it seriously when you realize how vulnerable the "dark forces" are. And to make everything worse the plot has a "twist" that would make Mr. Night proud, and the last scene is stupid. Overall, disappointing.
