A very difficult film to assess. Werner and his cinematographer work over time to compose some amazing shots and subtle camera moves. Then there's the excellent surreal dalliances that evoke a Fear & Loathing vibe occasionally (The Iguanas and the dancing soul scene). When I first watched it I really got off on Nic Cage's utterly random, changeable, obvious and downright daft performance but after watching maestro of the insane and intense Kinski recently, Nicolas Cage is a drag, see-through, irrelevant and irritating. Like the best films though it doesn't let you get complacent for a moment.
