Leighton Trent’s review:
Minnelli and Garland's first musical together is a luminous affair. It's charming throughout especially with a perfect blend of familial humor, and the songs tied into the actual narrative (one of the first to do this), fit so well. You would think the story would be the World's Fair, or the love story between Garland and whatever throwaway beau the story has for us, but it's about this family and what pulls them apart and brings them back together. Ultimately, it's the city itself.
