List by Leighton Trent
The 25 Best I've Seen (So Far)
Inspired by Sight and Sound's recent new list and Roger Ebert doing his as well, I decided to do a list of my top films, in my mind the best I've seen. These are the foremost, the ones that come to mind first. I'm sure I've forgotten some (please mention if you feel free), and some I've cut from the list are some of the best films made (Casblanca, Taxi Driver, Metropolis, E.T., Apocalypse Now, even the recent watch of Hoop Dreams, etc). It's just me and what hits my personality as "the best". In the end, these kind of lists are inconsequential, frivolous, but fun nonetheless.
*Only two directors have more than one film: Hitchcock and Kubrick each with two.
*Only 3 Best Pictures here (Gone with the Wind, The Godfather, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest)
*Only 3 from 2000 on: In the Mood for Love ('00), The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford ('07), The Tree of Life ('11)

Great selection, lot of these among my own favourites too. Still haven't seen seven of them, and I must admit I'd not even heard of Make Way Tomorrow. Looks brilliant, very eager to check that one out.
Great list! Nice seeing In the Mood for Love making the cut.
Just finished editing it, so here's the final tally.

Which ones have you seen, Del?
I've seen 17 of these, but own 3 of the ones I haven't seen.
Two out of four isn't too bad, I guess... :P I absolutely love all four myself.
@Del Boy
Tree of Life - can understand, to some degree
Jaws - who doesn't
The Godfather - I would've been sad to read anything else
2001 - Understandable, even to more major film nerds than me
@Richard - Which 3 are those?
Dammit Del, watch One Flew Over the Cukcoo's Nest!
*Cuckoo's
@Del - I'm sure you can squeeze in some McMurphy.
@Del - Fair enough, being swamped by stuff is good.
Network, Fanny & Alexander, and Gone With the Wind.
I'll probably watch them in that order, too. I've been meaning to watch Network for what seems like years now.
Fantastic list! A lot of these I either love or haven't seen. That reminds me, I still really need to check out The Red Shoes one of these days.
@Del Boy - No prob
@Richard - I know that feeling lol. I've have ones like those (owned and unowned) that I've meaning to get to for ages.
@SilentJoe - thx!
AMEND: Missed Passion of Joan of Arc, when looking over my 5 star ratings on here. Inserted at #19
Fantastic list. Really glad to see Fanny and Alexander in the top spot, it's one of my five favourite movies of all time (the five hour version, that is!)
Great list, delighted to see two of my top 5 (2001 and Network) in there. Still three of them I have yet to see (F&A [for shame], Make Way for Tomorrow and Spirit of the Beehive).
Jaws is the only film there I consider out of place - it's great but to me doesn't quite belong in such esteemed company. That said, if you grew up with it as a favourite I can totally understand the need for it to be there.
Also, Rear Window as Hitch's best? You're damn right!
Oh, I think Jaws definitely belongs on a list like this one.
@Tyler - Thanks, yes, only the five hour version indeed!
@DeusExCinema - Thank ya! (I still don't see how Network didn't get one single vote in the Sight and Sound List/Poll!!)... I think Jaws is there because of that, but it was also because I felt I needed to honor a movie of the masses. It does seem somewhat about of place, but it is just perfect - and this is easily the best of those for the masses... Absolutely, no question on Rear Window; why don't the others see it?!
@Richard - Yes, yes it does! The best a movie has ever been done with "B" stylings surrounding it.
Very interesting list Leighton. There are truly some great films here. I am a fan of Bergman's work but would not put "Fanny" on top.
:-)
It's neat to see your appreciation for the often overlooked "The Last Picture Show".
I would also agree Jaws deserves high ranking. It would be in my top 10 without doubt.
I have seen all but two; and enjoyed them all.
