Heroines Unite!

Cinema, especially the action genre, still is a often male dominated world, where women often only serve as an eye-pleasing sidekick (nothing wrong with that in my book, hehe), but sometimes they are the main attraction and not just for their good looks, they kick the shit out of everyone else! You go, girl! More power to you!

List is a work in progress and in order of their year of production, if it is a series of movies I just included the first one.

I will add a movie whenever it comes to my mind or if someone suggests one (feel free!).

  • @Dirk: will add Kick-Ass if you kick ass on the field on Wednesday, deal? :D

  • @Richard: Thanks again, judging from the trailers again China O'Brien looks really cheesy :D but Raging Phoenix looks really cool, can you recommend it?

Plus I just remembered and added Tokyo Gore Police, ultra trashy but she sure kicks some ass... but with that being said, I should probably stop adding asian gore stuff, too, because there are a lot of them with female "heroes" and this list gets trashy very fast with those ^^

  • That's a deal mate!

  • Some suggestions: BloodRayne, Alice (2009), Princess Mononoke, Tank Girl, Foxy Brown, Coffy, and Mulan.

I got bored so I went through my movies list. Ha.

  • @Wattlebird: Thanks! Added them except BloodRayne (it is Uwe Boll, I just couldn't... hehe... ) and Alice, it is a tv mini series, right? Unless you mean a different Alice movie? And is there ass kicking involved in Mulan, have not seen it?

  • The unbelievably silly Eve of destruction needs to be on here!

  • @Dirk: lol, the trailer looks awesome :D But is she the center of the movie or just the villain? The trailer looks like the movie follows mainly the agent (or whatever he is)?

  • She is the hero and the villain or maybe not....I honestly can't remember. It is a female terminator though....

  • Cool list. I've been thinking of doing a greatest women characters list for ages (mainly because Total Film's one was so crap). You've inspired me to start it so any suggestions: letterboxd.com/dani/list/25-greatest-female-characters-please-help/

Re. the victim/hero (Sarah Connor) debate, I'd think tonnes of protagonists are (male and female) are both. Just think of the idea of a reluctant hero - so often the story is catalysed by the protagonist being a victim of something and rising to become a hero. Not sure Sarah Connor qualifies as an action hero though.

My suggestions: Nikita in La Femme Nikita and Geum-Ja Lee in Lady Vengeance.

  • @Dani: Still feel like The Terminator doesn't qualify for this list, it is not a strong women or feminist list, it's just a fun list of (main character) women kicking ass. But you are right, it doesn't really matter if they were forced into the role or if they freely chose to be the ass-kicker, in fact some of the movies listed here are about female victims who are forced into their role. The Terminator character is just so strong and overshadows Sarah Connor, that's why the movie isn't included.

But I added your two suggestions, thanks for that!
