Andrew James’s review:
If I was 9, holy cow would this be the greatest thing ever. Visually the film is spectacular and many of the action sequences are pretty exciting.
The story line is so simple I almost wasn't sure what was going on. The casting was interesting and quite prolific and for the most part worked well - as phoned in as it may be. Though I love Rosamund Pike and believe she should be in a lot more stuff (a lead would be nice), I didn't buy her role as a great warrior/leader one bit. It was ridiculous. Poor casting there.
Effects and camera work were better than I had anticipated and it reminded me a lot of the current gen video game series, God of War (of which I am a fan). The final boss battle, the various creatures and weapons and the really cool locations (the maze was of particular awesome). The director did a nice job of showing us all these locales with pull backs and 360 degree camera movements rather than constant close-up shaky cam.
Not a great movie certainly and it isn't really something I would plan on watching again, but a lot better than some of the reviews here are claiming. The visual and FX alone are worth a couple of stars in my opinion. And if nothing else it made me want to go back and brush up on some of my mythology reading.
