Movies that Need a Criterion Release

Will add more as they come to me.

Since 1984, The Criterion Collection is the premiere label in DVD and Blu-ray releases. A series of important classic and contemporary films, that's been dedicated to gathering the greatest films from around the world and publishing them in editions that offer the highest technical quality and award-winning, original supplements.

I wish these movies would be released under this label and also seem like they'd fit nicely with the rest of the catalog.

  • Considering how many Kurosawa films they have already, they really need to add Dersu Uzala, an incredible movie late in his career that I consider one of his best.

  • Oh and having just seen Robert Bresson's A Man Escaped, that is a MUST down the line. They have been putting a bunch of his stuff out lately, but A Man Escaped is the best prison escape film I have ever seen.

  • Is Fantastic Mr. Fox the only Wes Anderson movie that's NOT on Criterion?

  • I think you're right. It's only a matter of time - though it looks like it won't be happening this year. Likely 2013...

    if humans still exist then.

  • Come to think of it, are there any animated films in the Criterion Collection? That seems like a definite area where they could improve. I see you've got a couple of more on there...I'd add Grave of the Fireflies and Akira for sure. It'd be great to get some really good editions of more artsy animation out there. The Adventures of Prince Achmed. Some Czech stop motion.

  • Hm. That's a great point. I don't think there are any animated films. I'll add more to this list just because they don't have any I can think of off the top of my head.

  • Great list. Nice to see City of Lost Children on there, one of my personal favs. Speaking of animated, what about The Triplets of Belleville??

  • Hell yes. Added.

And even though I couldn't stand the film, I'd put Enter the Void on this list too.

  • Another great choice with Enter the Void. I know the opinions are really spread out on that one, but what I would do to watch/hear some Criterion insight on that one. Not to mention Natural Born Killers and Eternal Sunshine.

  • Not to toot my own horn or anything, but looking again, dammit this is a good list.

  • In the Mood for Love and 2046. I don't think either are on Criterion yet.

  • In the Mood for Love is (and Chungking Express). ITMFL is getting a Blu-ray upgrade in October.

I'd think they'd do Badlands at some point. Both Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line are in the collection, so they already endorse Malick. :)

  • I'd give my right eye for a Stroszek Criterion Blu-ray.

  • One of Memento's DVD releases has a very Criterion-esque box art. Here's an image: ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51XVPNHH0NL.jpg

  • GHOST World is allegedly in the works which I am looki forward to

  • Coen Brothers' Barton Fink is probably tops on my Criterion wishlist.

Also, having just watched Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, would love to finally have that get a U.S. release in general, would be amazing to see Criterion give it some proper treatment.
