Jude Seymour’s review published on Letterboxd:
The film stars James Cagney, Henry Fonda, William Powell, and Jack Lemmon. It was almost like there were movies back in the day just made for me 50 years later. If it had Humphrey Bogart and Edward G. Robinson in it, I would have proclaimed it my favorite movie ever.
Mister Roberts was definitely a great one though. It's kind of a shame that it didn't make the top 100 in the same way it's a shame "Barefoot" didn't make it: they were both really enjoyable films. Mister Roberts was a war film, but it had a lot of comedic spins.
Everyone's role is maybe a little stereotypical, but they are performed by the best. You know you're watching a good piece of film when you sit down with this movie. The only drawback to it is that it's not technically splendid, and maybe if John Ford hadn't gotten sick and Melvn LeRoy stepped in, we could have had something truly remarkable. As it is however, it is recommendable. All that, and it was free at my local library.
