  • Pain & Gain 2013

Michael Bay is back where he belongs: Making deleriously funny, morally reprehensible cinema for grown ups who like to laugh at the awful, stupid things people do to each other. What makes his Transformers movies so fundamentally troubling is what makes Pain & Gain so engrossing and entertaining, but if it takes three more Transformers movies to get Bay making a movie this good again, I'll see Transformers 4 about twenty times.

  • You're Next 2013

    ★★★★ Added 1

Scary enough to be exciting, funny enough to cut through the misery and slaughter. You're Next is a real treat for genre fans who usually have to settle for one or the other with their horror; a scary movie that takes itself too seriously or a funny movie that never once gets your heartbeat moving.

Cleverly plotted with twists and turns that subvert expectations, a cast that is top to bottom great (someone hand Sharni Vinson the Tomb Raider franchise,…

  • Gangster Squad 2013

    ★★ Added

The cast are solid, if unspectacular. The only performer I would single out for ridicule is Ryan Gosling, who sounded like he was going in to audition for the Three Stooges movie and walked into the wrong office on the day.

The actors are all talented stars, they were just never given anything to get their teeth into, as the films is pitched at a level that felt a little too detached from reality. Not that strict realism is called…

  • A Good Day to Die Hard 2013

When a film makes you nostalgic for the days when Len Wiseman directed the franchise, you know something's fucked up.

  • The ABCs of Death 2013

No surprises that the worst of a decidedly shabby show was Ti West's repugnant, lazy miscarriage episode. It almost made me retroactively appreciate House of the Devil's comatose restraint more, but not quite.

  • The ABCs of Death 2013

    Added

A few standouts but predominantly a tedious production line of insincere shock tactics and scatological humour.

  • Fast & Furious 6 2013

    ★★★★ Added

May not best Fast Five but it is certainly equal to it. The story is dumb and the dialogue is corny but it's sincere in its efforts, it cares about its cast of characters and wants the fans to share that. The set pieces are big and inventive, constantly escalating and finding new avenues for action within, all executed with masterful control by Justin Lin. If Fast Five was Lin's announcement as a major blockbuster director, Fast & Furious 6 is…

  • The Place Beyond the Pines 2012

A mournful, minor epic about fathers and the world they leave behind for their children.

  • Iron Man 3 2013

    ★★★★ Added

Might be my favourite Marvel movie so far, certainly the most complete Iron Man movie yet (having a complete script certainly helps). More thoughts as they come to me...

This review reportedly contains spoilers. I can handle the truth.

  • Nobody Walks 2012

    ★★ Added

It makes Sofia Coppola look like Michael Bay. Cinematic ambien.

  • G.I. Joe: Retaliation 2013

    ★★ Added

In an attempt to tone down the Saturday Morning Cartoon tone of the original movie, they go too far and make their sequel (slash soft-reboot) feel small. The action is haphazardly put together and it continues Bruce Willis' piss poor 2013, coming off the back of his fantastic 2012. Seriously, I can't imagine the size of the bill that follows phoning in a performance like that. Needed a lot more Channing Tatum.
