Michael Bates’s review:
As a follow up to Flowers Of War I watched this film of the atrocity of NanKing as told more in docu-drama style. This film is very brutal in it's telling of the fall of NanKing and does little in sparing the viewer in the absolute horrors of war. John Rabe one of the heroes of NanKing comes across as tepid man who was just in over his head and fled when the going got tough.
This film is honest in it's depiction and it shows some of the conflicts in which the soldiers of Japans army must face as the orders against NanKings citizens become more and more horrific for the citizens of NanKing. Be warned this film does not hold back on the violence and it is very hard sometimes to watch. If you love WWII films this is right up there with Stalingrad and Das Boat.
