Full disclosure: I haven't seen any of the Star Trek films based on the original TV cast, which means I have no idea what happened in Star Trek I thru III.
That being said this was a very entertaining film. I really think of it as a Sci-Fi-Comedy, because the plot is so ridiculous even for Sci-Fi that you just go along with it and enjoy the Star Trek crew fumble around 1986 San Francisco. I also appreciate how this popular franchise that has always explored deeply human questions takes a stab at humanity causing the extinction of animals. Could this film be the turning point of the humpback whale population? Clearly this chart says so: <img src="http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/campaigns/esa_works/graphs/thumbs2/HumpbackWhale_t.jpg"
