This is so out of sync with internationally canonized Russian cinema, it makes me feel like an idiot for assuming that was all there was. Why wouldn't the Soviets have made romantic comedies? And good ones, too, there's some great comedic acting on display here. There's also some fun formal experimentation: one scene skips through 4th wall breaking, silent film homage, and a slow motion sequence straight outta Wes Anderson in under a minute.
