Colombiana 2011 ★★½

This was Hollywood's roll of the dice on Zoe Saldana as a star. They went with the action genre thanks to her successful supporting roles in both Star Trek and Avatar. She's really good in both so you can see where they got the idea.

Its not a bad flick, albeit straight to DVD fare. Zoe doesn't cover herself in glory but neither does she embarrass herself. Director Olivier Megaton ensures his quick cut abscure any weaker movements. Its perhaps telling that my favourite part of the movie was the opening 30 minutes, which doesn't have Zoe in it at all. Although this is quickly followed by an equally strong scene starring Saldana where she's arrested and shenanigans go down at a police station.

After those two scenes it does rather become a run-of-the-mill revenge saga. Some innovative scenes don't push the film beyond the mediocrity at its core. Like the romantic angle with Michael Vartan, which was just to push the plot towards another chaotic shoot-out.

On the whole, its ok but I wouldn't feel the need to see it again. Well, maybe that scene where she's prancing around the cop shop in a skintight black bodysuit.
