  • 13 Assassins 2011

    ★★★★ Watched 04 Aug, 2012

I love me some Takashi Miike. This is one of his more polished films although its not lacking the usual carnage, chaos and utter destruction. The entire second half of the film is a swordfight! A massive town devastating swordfight featuring virtually the entire cast in a battle to the death.

The film is not without flaws. The bad guy is almost cartoonish in his evil ways. The 13 protagonists makes it hard to route for the good guys because there are so many and mostly underdeveloped. The two rather offset each other and keep the runtime around 2 hours. A necessary decision.

  • 21 Jump Street 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 08 May, 2012

I was really not expecting this. 21 Jump Street is clever, funny and extremely likeable. Not only that but Channing Tatum actually found a personality from somewhere. All in the name of comedy. He makes for a great straight guy opposite Jonah Hill's surprisingly thin funny guy. Its one of the best cop buddy pairings since Lethal Weapon. Its not a brilliant film but it does play off action movie tropes quite nicely and provides satisfying scenes throughout. Most importantly it'll make you laugh.

  • 22 Bullets 2010

Run-of-the-mill French revenge thriller. Basically Jean Reno intersperses time talking to people with occasionally shooting them.

  • 28 Days Later... 2003

    ★★★★ Rewatched 22 Oct, 2012 1

Re-watched as part of 2012's Halloween season.

The Scarecrow and Tia Dalma battling 'not-actually-zombies' RAGE Infected angry 'totally-not-zombies-because-they-run' across England. I like it marginally less at the second viewing. Possibly because half of my favorite scenes are actually in the sequel. How about that shit? However it does still retain mad-as-eggs Brendan Gleeson as a London cabby who drives our heroes to Manchester where they battle more RAGE Infected 'totally-not-zombies' and a few soldiers who use the word "cunt" as…

  • 30 Minutes or Less 2011

    ★★½ Watched 23 Oct, 2012

I enjoyed 30 Minutes or Less. True, its a very silly film but I was tired after a long day at work and I needed something unchallenging. It delivered in that respect. I thought Eisenberg was ok but the movie suffered from a string of 'wacky' and 'improv' turns. And so much uncreative swearing. Come on, Danny McBride, every other word out of your mouth is "fuck", "motherfucking" or "blowjob". If you're going to swear like a sailor then at…

  • $5.00 a day 2008

    ★★★ Watched 29 Jul, 2012

I'm starting to think Christopher Walken can save pretty much any film. Regardless of how strong his co-stars are or how decent the script is. Here he makes a generic road movie work. Its all about father-son bonding and yet his eccentricities overpower everything. There's one scene that was improvised and it feels so real that I wish they'd shot the whole movie as improv. The rest of the time its touches of Walken that own all. Singing, dancing, being scared of blenders. Its all in here. The man is a genius. If you're making a film and you can afford him, do it.

  • Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 2012

    ★★★ Watched 11 Oct, 2012

I don't understand why I like Timur Bekmambetov movies. He uses many of the same directorial crutches that I hate in other directors. Like slo-mo and style over substance. There's just something visually stimulating about his films that I find irresistible. So even though this is a big dumb movie, I actually enjoyed it.

I guess the idea of Abe Lincoln running around splitting vampire's wigs with a silver axe just floated my boat.

  • Act of Valor 2012

Like watching someone you hate play the worst video game ever made.

  • A Fantastic Fear of Everything 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 03 Feb, 2013 2

I'd seen this doing the rounds on Letterboxd. It starts out remarkably well with an insane Pegg going slowly crazier in his London flat. A series of events drive his evening and give him goofy set pieces to work around. The film starts to go downhill when Pegg leaves his flat. The confined space and the one-man performance had sold me on the concept. But the additional characters are uneven and don't measure up to Pegg's turn. Pegg's character is…

  • All the Pretty Horses 2000

    ★★★½ Added

I saw this the other day it depressed the hell out of me. Which is probably why no one wants to pay Billy Bob Thornton to make movies. How do you sell it? "This movie is a total downer". SOLD!

  • A Monster in Paris 2011

    ★★★ Watched 23 May, 2013

I was planning on watching Django Unchained this evening but the presence of my 13 year old daughter rather rendered that impossible. So I popped onto Lovefilm instant and slapped on a Monster in Paris. A charming animated movie with heavy doses of Phantom of the Opera, King Kong and Beauty and the Beast. The animation is tidy and certainly rivals the big American studios without ever stunning the audience. I could have lived without all the song and dance…

  • Another Earth 2011

    ★★★★ Watched 10 Jan, 2013

I'd read a few positive reviews of Another Earth without really delving too deeply into them. I honestly don't like to know much about any film before I start watching it. I hardly ever watch trailers, for example, and I tend to read reviews after I've seen it for comparison purposes. Did the reviewer like the same things I did or pick up on some subliminal meaning beyond the ones I was seeing. But in general Another Earth was picking…
