The Raid: Redemption 2012 ★★★★

Watched Apr 18, 2012

Holy shitballs was this movie action-packed and intense! The only aspect I'd compare to Battle Royale is its extreme over the top violence throughout. For comparison I'd say it was more like a mix between Die Hard, The Warriors and Hard Boiled with a solid balance of gunplay and martial arts. The plot wasn't anything unique but it wasn't meant to be. There is rarely a dull moment and honestly, I praise its ability to have a video game-like scenario and still work as a beginning, middle and end. The main villain's right hand baddie is easily the best character in the film. He has this kind of confidence that makes his sinister presence even more menacing. I have a feeling this will end up on a lot of people's "Best of 2012" lists by this year's end. After seeing this and Hanna, my faith is returning to the action genre. Also, though they are vastly different films, I think The Raid would make a great double feature with last year's Attack the Block.
