Notable Revisionist and Modern Crime/Noir
The golden age of film noir has often been cited as from the early 1940's to the late 50's. Here is a list I compiled of films from then on that either attempted to keep the feel of film noir in contemporary settings, are greatly influenced by the genre, or just set out to turn all of its conventions on their head.
NOTE: This is not a list of my favorites but of the films I have seen that I feel have some degree of significance to the genre. It's in no particular order.
I don't know enough about noir to argue some of these picks that strike me as out of place, but i can definetly say Winter's Bone should be on here. And did you just overlook Chinatown or is that not revisionist?
In all honesty I wasn't too concerned with Chinatown. I was more focused on films that maintained the classic noir influence while taking place in a more modern setting, which Chinatown is not. I feel Chinatown would have been considered classic noir had it come out in the 50's. But who knows I may think about it more and add it, along with LA Confidential.
Also, I haven't put every film up yet that I want to. I suppose I should have articulated that it's a work in progress. This isn't every single film I know of, just what came out off the top of my head. Also if you read the description it says modern noir and modern films influenced by noir, so not everything is going to be considered part of the genre so much as what films I believe are heavily influenced by it. Winter's Bone isn't on the list because I'm putting only movies I've seen.
I only just put this up last night. You should come back to it in a few days or a week to see what else I've added. My lists are almost always incomplete and ongoing due to my schedule, but I hope that doesn't deter you from enjoying them.
Yeah, I get it. Not entirely sure why Chinatown is the definitive neonoir. It seems to play it pretty straight.
