  • The Avengers 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 02 Oct, 2012 2

You don't have to be a fan of Marvel's superheroes to enjoy this film. I hadn't seen any of Marvel's films before watching this, and I found it very enjoyable and engaging. The film introduces each superhero in such a way that you get a sense of their personality and background, so you "get" all the interactions between the characters even if you haven't seen any of their films. Very well done on the filmmakers' part.

    Naturally, then, the focus…

  • The Dark Knight Rises 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 24 Jan, 2013 3

I wasn't sure what I thought of this movie until I got to the ending. Then I started crying. The ending is thrilling, tragic, and touching all at once.

As for the rest of the movie, it was interesting, both in an entertainment sense and in an intellectual sense. Like "The Dark Knight," the themes are complex and thought-provoking; it's a movie I'll have to watch multiple times before I fully grasp all the nuances. Unlike "The Dark Knight," however,…

After much debate, I finally decided to continue my journey with Nolan's Batman and watch this infamously intense film. Having done so, I'm finding it very difficult to process my thoughts, but I do know one thing--it's not a pleasure film.

"Batman Begins" is a film a watch for pleasure, for the sheer enjoyment of it. I watch it because I like Bruce. I watch it because I admire Gordon and Alfred. I watch it because Bruce and Rachel's romance…

  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 2012

    ★★★★★ Rewatched 24 Mar, 2013

I was glad this released on Blu-Ray/DVD so I could watch it again and absorb it at my own pace. I particularly wanted to study the costume and set design in 2D; I saw it in theaters in 3D, and as intriguing as 3D is, the lack of focus sometimes produced by 3D makes it hard to truly appreciate the depth and detail of the art.

    ★★★★★ Watched 17 Dec, 2012

It's hard to capture my thoughts on a movie this epic (and by that I'm referring to the proportions of it) after only seeing it once, but I can say three things:

    1) It's the best fantasy cross-country adventure I've ever been on.

    2) I love how it managed to be frequently funny--and more light-hearted than Lord of the Rings--without being trite.

    3) It's gorgeous. Most realistic fantasy settings and creatures I've ever seen.

In regards to the last one,…

  • Life of Pi 2012

    ★★★ Watched 04 Jun, 2013

I originally passed this film over because it sounded boring, to put it bluntly. I'm not sure what convinced me to try it... perhaps a combination of the praise for the animated tiger and the rumors about the religious aspects. I was curious to see how both played out.

It wasn't boring; it definitely sustained my interest, although I'm not sure I could drag myself through the book. It's a very artistic film visually, with some interesting and surreal effects…

  • The Hunger Games 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 02 Sep, 2012

A film about teens fighting to the death? Doesn't sound like my kind of movie on the surface. But I became interested in it when I heard it was dystopian and decided to give it a shot. I was not disappointed.

If you want dystopian, this film is excellent. This is the best dystopian world I have witnessed in awhile. Very well-developed and utterly fascinating, with all the moral quandaries and questions that make dystopian powerful. As a related note,…

  • Wreck-It Ralph 2012

    ★★★★★ Rewatched 05 Mar, 2013

This film released on DVD/Blu-Ray today. To say I had been eagerly anticipating the release would be an understatement. I was thrilled to finally be able to watch it again--and it was every bit as good as I remembered, if not more so. Buy it, people, and encourage Disney to make more movies like this!

I debated about seeing this film in theaters. It sounded interesting--video game characters in a movie?--but I figured I could wait until the DVD release. But a family member was going, so I decided to splurge and tag along just for fun.

And now I'm wishing I could see it again.

This film is 104 minutes of pure delight. The animation is flawless and the score is moving; I've never heard of Henry Jackman before, but he's good. The humor…

  • Batman Begins 2005

    ★★★★ Watched 01 Oct, 2012

Short version: This film is complicated and thought-provoking, which make it an excellent piece for discerning viewers. The movie shed light on many angles of the themes of justice, revenge, and fear and gave me much to ponder. Although I don't necessarily agree with every position presented, there was a lot I found admirable, especially in regards to the secondary characters.

The objectionable content of the film is very low, except for one scene where Bruce fills the role of…

  • The Amazing Spider-Man 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 04 Dec, 2012

And so I continue my journey into the realm of superhero movies... and continue to be suitably satisfied. This film was definitely worth a watch and made for quite an enjoyable evening (in an edge-of-your-seat sort of way). That being said, I'm not sure yet where it whether it will win a spot on my list of favorites.

When I review a film, I assess it on three levels--art, story, and theme. In terms of art, this movie truly is…

  • Lincoln 2012

    ★★★★★ Watched 07 Apr, 2013

This movie was, in a word, amazing. I am reminded how much I adore politics in film and literature... The political tension is beautifully rendered in this film, as is the motivation and personal life drama that drives the politicians themselves. The voting scene cast chills up my spine, and the banter between the politicians is riotous. Lincoln himself is rendered with incredible realism and depth--a real, tangible man who argues with his wife, offers warm-hearted advice to his men,…
