Man of Steel 2013
Sad face. I'm definitely conflicted about most of what this film is. Ultimately I wanted this to be something unique that stood on its own and was more than the sum of its parts that had something to say, that maybe even started a new cultural conversation on the Superman myth but it never really got there for me. I think this is mostly because it relies on a lot of the conventions of blockbuster filmmaking without creating ANY of…

Before Sunrise 1995
Wistful, beautifully acted and photographed- Before Sunrise definitely distinguishes itself as almost being equal parts travelogue as well as romantic drama. I love the synergy between Delpy and Hawke in all of their scenes together and the progressing intimacy that develops between the two of them really draws you in and creates emotional stakes for the ending that is set up and the overall foundation of what has now become a trilogy. Their time together feels like a series of…

Total Recall 1990
Love this film and it has still held up so well over the years probably because of the film's visual look that seems dominated by physical effects (miniature models, matte paintings, mutant makeup effects, blue screen, etc). Drag Me to Hell 2009
Even better than I remembered it- love the Raimi touch in this film- the score, situations and horror elements are all over the top but it is so much fun. Allison Lohman's performance, which ranges from hilarious deadpan to unadulterated fury is amazing and Justin Long is perfect as the concerned boyfriend along for the wild ride. It is all worth it for that amazing final scene. Highly recommended to horror comedy fans, this is a pinnacle. :)
