It's not as immediately mindblowing as There Will Be Blood and while the film starts to drag halfway through and it's not really clear what it's trying to achieve, the acting by Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffmann is absolutely phenomenal. If Phoenix doesn't win an Oscar for his performance, something is wrong.
I think this is one film that'll really benefit from a re-watch.
Forget everything you know about Dredd - that is, if your only knowledge of him is the film starring Sylvester Stallone from the 90's. Admittedly, I haven't read the comic book series, but from what I hear this movie is pretty much everything fans of it could ask for.
Even if you're not familiar with the character at all this movie deserves to be a success. It's been a long while since I've seen a new action movie hitting all…
Sweeeeet. Okay, after reading some of people's criticism of the film I can definitely see the flaws in the movie, but for the the two and a half hours it lasted I was completely engrossed. The crew might've made some stupid decisions in hindsight and the plot's development towards the big action filled ending didn't feel completely natural, but I feel Bret Easton Ellis said it best on his Twitter: "When movies deliver the atmosphere and the grandeur and the precision of something like Prometheus: the flaws in the script DO. NOT. MATTER."
Oh, and it is well worth seeing in 3D, too.
