Ronan Doyle’s review:
Much like with A History of Violence, I find myself looking around, thinking "what have I missed?" Don't get me wrong, this is a very good film. Strong performances, an engaging plot, characters you're interested in, etc. I just don't see, apart from one scene in particular, how it would be considered a great film. Even discounting the obvious flaws—the dodgy accents and over-the-top score in places—what you have is a good story well told. For me a great film needs to be more, needs to go deeper, needs to make me think or feel something of greater importance. This I enjoyed, and quite a bit, but that's about it. Perhaps I wanted something a little more shocking from Cronenberg.
I liked this film, but nowhere near as much as I liked A History of Violence.
Looks like they're planning a sequel to the story. I loved the first.
I'll agree with you on this film, but History of Violence I loved. I believe that film is a story well told with all the depth you feel is missing from this film.
However sometimes I think a great story well told is all I'm after.
