List by Ronan Doyle
Around the World in 80 Films
I've seen this concept used by some bloggers and always thought it was a really great way to broaden one's movie-watching horizons. Each choice, where I've seen enough to have one, is my favourite film from that particular country. Obviously funding comes from a variety of places with most productions, so I've tried to make every choice a film that is particular to the respective country in some way, be it in setting, characters, or themes.
Please suggest countries and films not on the list, and hopefully with your help I can arrive at 80 in no time. It would be great if the list could stand as a catalogue of greats once it's completed, so where I don't consider a particular pick great I'll note it in the list view and welcome you to suggest something better for that country.

"but don't expect Hukkle to pip Werckmeister Harmonies, it's the greatest film from any country in my opinion!"
I found it incredibly hard going... don't think I could face it again.
In that you couldn't get with the pace, or that the whole thing was just too depressing? It's definitely the kind of thing you have to be eager to go with, one of the many reasons I love it so.
It was just a chore. I think you have to be in the right frame of mind to tackle it but I can't imagine ever wanting to again.
55 down, 25 to go. Still need your help folks!
A few recommendations:
Algeria - Days of Glory
Bosnia and Herzegovina - No Man's Land
New Zealand - Once Were Warriors
South Africa - Stander
Thank you sir, much obliged. Happy to see that No Man's Land is available via Netflix, so that'll be getting checked out very soon indeed.
Sure thing! Stander is actually available on Netflix as well if you have any interest in that film.
Cuba - Memories of Underdevelopment
Estonia - The Temptation of St. Tony
Updated, having forgotten about this for quite a while, with choices from Cuba, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, which I've now decided to include as a "country" as it has its own film industry, separate to that of China. Some other countries have been updated with new, better films. Any and all further suggestions appreciated, particularly if they happen to be available on Netflix!
