Bergman Ranked

What the heck, might as well make one of these for old Ingmar too. A sure contender for favourite director of mine, Bergman is inarguably one of the greatest dramatists there ever was. Together with his regular troupe of actors he produced some of the finest performances ever put to film, and with cinematographer Sven Nykvist some of the most iconic and striking images ever projected on a screen. The emotional enormity of the man's work is unparalleled, the indelible influence of his legacy unlikely to ever be exceeded.
I still have a lot to see, what's most important to check out?

  • You definitely need to watch Scenes from a Marriage whilst Shame and Passion of Anna are also excellent. My list

  • Scenes certainly appears to be my most egregious oversight. Interesting similarities and differences between our lists, pleased to see Winter Light ranks so highly for you too. I take it you're not much a fan of Marionettes?

  • No, in fact I flat out don't like it. It seems strange that I'd love Scenes from a Marriage so much yet dislike the two films associated with it (Saraband being the other).

  • I agree with Adam that you definitely need to see Scenes from a Marriage, Shame, and Passion of Anna. I would also recommend Smiles of a Summer Night and to me, the most important film not listed, Fanny and Alexander. Although Saraband isn't as good as Scenes, it's still a good film, so even though I agree with Adam about those other 3 films, I disagree with him regarding Saraband. Make sure to watch Scenes before Saraband.
