Kingdom of Heaven 2005 ★★★★

Reviewed Apr 14, 2012

The first time I saw this film was in the cinema, and I left with a nagging feeling of disappointment and a slightly bad taste in my mouth. The pacing was awful, and there were just too many events, conversations and details that seemed arbitrary and without motive. Shortly after, I read a comment from director Ridley Scott about his annoyance at being forced by the studio to cut the running time, which in his opinion, caused the film to badly suffer. So when the director's cut was released, I eagerly gave it a second chance. With the cut scenes restored, it is still flawed, however, it is also far more watchable. I found myself truly impressed with Scott's mastery at using sets and locations to create an immersive viewing experience.
