Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett impressed greatly with their breakthrough horror movie You're Next not long back. Now they're back with the even more impressive The Guest. A deliberate throwback to the '80s like of The Hitcher and The Terminator by way of Halloween (and with the musical stylings of Drive), The Guest is an old-fashioned treat. Dan Stevens, putting a bullet squarely between the eyes of his Downton Abbey roots, is by turns mesmerising and terrifying as the polite, friendly and decidedly homicidal David. Stevens is definitely a megastar in the making, with all of Ryan Gosling's intensity but the added ability to make more than one facial expression. Fun, compelling, scary and with some proper old-fashioned karyo syrup blood splatter, The Guest is well worth your time.
