Bill Shannon’s review published on Letterboxd:
No, it's not about THAT day in September.
What is a remarkable revelation about this documentary -- an account of Palestinian terrorists' kidnapping of Israeli athletes on Sept. 5 of the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics -- is not so much the terrorist attacks themselves. What is remarkable is the stunning ineptitude of the German government in reaction to the crisis.
The terrorists were two-bit mercenaries who made several major flaws ripe for exploitation by interlopers trying to save the Israeli athletes. But the Germans were so ill-prepared (and possibly corrupt later) that what the terrorists accomplished went far beyond what they should have.
The documentary itself is extremely well-executed, with archival film footage, visual re-enactments and family members' insights replacing your typical "talking head" technique so common in documentaries. Wholly compelling.
