Popular Films That I Don't Like
Not necessarily 'overrated', just a list of (generally) highly popular films that I don't like.
I may add more to this list as I think of them.
Please feel free to lay into me for disrespecting your favourite films.
A few films on there I love, notably Apocalypse Now, Fright Night (original), A History of Violence and Shaun of the Dead. Though there is quite a few I share your disdain for as well.
Ah, "Rocky?"
Well, at least we agree on "Kick-Ass" and "The Last House on the Left."
How can one not enjoy Anchorman?
@Matthew - I suppose a vehement hatred of Will Ferrell could have something to do with it!
And why is that?
I think it's strange that people legitimately like Titanic.
Totally with you with regards to Avatar and Titanic. Terrible movies. Come to think of it... I wasn't too fond of Piranha 2, The Abyss or True Lies either. Technically there are only 3 good James Cameron films and even one of them is an inferior sequel.
The Transformer films are poo... and Forrest Gump is a massive pile of arse gravy too.
Never been one for Apocalypse Now as it seems quite pretentious. Reminded me of The Shining... which I don't "get".
@Matthew - I'm not entirely sure why. He just comes across as too 'try-hard' for me, although I don't really like any of the comedy 'actors' from his era (Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson etc.) either.
@Melissa - It really confuses me how Titanic is hailed as such a 'modern classic'.
@HotDonkeyBear - Thanks for reminding me of the Abyss - another terrible film. Onto the list is goes!
I love Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, The Sixth Sense, A History of Violence, and Kick-Ass. There are several others I really like or at least like. I agree with you on Titanic to me it's the most overrated film of all time. I'll never watch The Twilight films and they're only really well liked by teenage girls.
Forrest Gump is way to 'schmaltzy' and sickly sweet for my tastes, plus I don't rate Tom Hanks much as an actor.
Saving Private Ryan, aside from the breathtaking intro is a fairly run of the mill 'men on a mission movie' with the typical Spielberg sentimentalism running throughout.
The Sixth Sense: A case of once revealed; forever forgotten with this film. The epitome of a 'watch once and never need to see again' kind of film. Shyamalan's films have become all about their twist, and this is no exception. Once you strip out the surprise ending, you're left with nothing but a dull and plodding thriller.
As for A History of Violence, I'm a huge fan of Cronenberg's 70s and 80s output, so to see him produce something so straight-laced and dull was a huge disappointment for me. By no means a bad film, but just something I didn't enjoy.
Kick-Ass was one I was sure I'd enjoy, but it never seemed to live up to the hype that it perpetrated pre-release. Ironically, Cage was the best thing about this film, when I went in expecting him to be the worst thing about it. I enjoyed the similar themed (but much more raw) 'Super' a lot more.
Twilight was a case of my curiosity getting the better of me. I knew of Catherine Hardwicke from the very interesting indie film 'Thirteen' she'd directed in 2003, so was interested to hear she was directing a film about vampires based on a best selling series of books. So, not knowing anything about the story or actors I stumbled blindly and stupidly into this one completely unprepared. Never again. A complete shit stain on the undergarments of cinema.
thirteen was a surprise for in 2003, not perfect but got the point across.
I love you for putting Forrest Gump on here. I have never found anyone else who doesn't like it!
I don't like Last House on the Left either. I actually don't like rape/revenge movies. I know that sub-genre has quite the cult following but everyone has a line and it crosses mine. I just don't get the same fulfillment out of the "revenge" aspect of the films that other people do, because I'm just made so incredibly uncomfortable with the "rape" part of the movie that it just makes me want to take a "rape shower" and stop watching it. Especially the films that exploit the rape scene to disproportionate levels. Which is odd, I know because people would think it's weird that I can watch plenty of movies where women are murdered in horrible ways and it doesn't cross any proverbial line. If I had to explain it, I would say that rape is far more "real" than a madman back from the dead chopping up teenagers. I have a few exceptions of course, rape/revenge movies I like but they tend to be layered with a bit more comedy/surrealism (i.e. the original Mother's Day).
While I certainly like/love a lot of these movies I understand that sometimes people just don't like a movie. The only one I'm having a hard time with is Shaun of the Dead, it's so funny and lovable! But, I know, I know, people like different things!
You're a braver man than most, some people tend to be attacked when they admit to not liking something well-received. I've gotten into heated debates over not liking some movies.
