The Night of the Iguana 1964 ★★★

Watched May 05, 2012

A rather odd film, with a great cast that somehow doesn't work as well as one might imagine it would. The play itself is rather overwrought and pretentious, with lines that are clearly meant to be profound but ring hollow. Burton lacks chemistry with any of the female leads and is frankly a bit annoying; Gardner and Kerr are better, but hardly up to the mesmerizing standards of their respective younger days. And yet the film does succeed in creating a unique atmosphere of crazed desperation in spite of all this, and is worth a watch despite its shortcomings.
