The Watch 2012 ★★★

Watched Aug 04, 2012

Had high hopes for this one for reasons I can’t really put my finger on. For the most part I was entertained, but “The Watch” never really gains enough momentum to elevate to true comedy gold. It’s more just a collection of scenes strung together rather than something that builds up to the climax. The good thing is a couple of those scenes are pretty funny – the group describing how Jonah Hill’s character is going to infiltrate the home of a suspected ne’er do well by dressing in drag, etc.

The most fun seems to come when the 4 actors in the Neighborhood Watch are riffing off each other (Vince Vaughn is back to his “Swingers”/ “Old School” form here, which is great), but when they have to stop for plot developments, the fun is stalled. The whole sub-plot with Ben Stiller and his wife is unnecessary and a little awkward, and is resolved with just a couple simple lines of dialogue after lingering for a better portion of the second act.

So, funny in spots, but not consistent enough to be great.
