Ray Hewitt’s review published on Letterboxd:
Dang if this isn't one of the rip-snortinest weirdo melodrama/westerns of them all! And I love every minute of it! Stanwyck is still in her prime. And she has some great comeback lines that she shoots at her two arch-nemesists here. They are Walter Huston, chewing scenery like there's no tomorrow, as per usual. And the snarky , backstabbing Judith Anderson. In one of her subtle villainess roles. Speaking of backstabbing-get a load of that scene between Anderson , Stanwyck and a pair of scissors! Yikes! The Criterion version comes with a copy of the original novel by Niven Busch. BTW, you don't have to be a western fan to dig this film. It has something for everyone! A certified Cult Classic
