Chimpanzee 2012 ★★★★

Watched May 20, 2012

The predominant question I had throughout the film was... "How'd they do that?" In fact, it was the first thing I Googled when I returned home from the theater.

By far the most impressive nature footage since the Planet Earth series. But as most nature docs simply cater to information relay, Chimpanzee goes for the narrative – one that they simply stumble upon.

While their are many moments in the film that you feel like Darwin must have got it right, it's the relationship between a young orphaned chimp and an unexpected friend that will certainly make you re-think our closest kin.

Unfortunately, the (sometimes) forced narration of Tim Allen seems to kill much of the would-be moments of wonder. At times, it even feels like you're watching an episode of Mystery Science Theater. But remember, this is Disney - masters of knowing their audience. And to their credit, they got my 5-year-old son to say it is his "3rd favorite movie of all time"... a ranking that I'm sure will shift tomorrow.

Here's a little behind-the-scenes piece I found.
