The Road 2009 ★★★½

Reviewed Nov 16, 2011

If you are a parent, or more specifically a dad, this movie will terrify you and make your heart ache. I made a point to watch this without my wife, because she wouldn't have made it very long.
Gut wrenching film about a father and a son trying to survive in one of the most frightening and grim visions of the near future I've ever seen in film.
Loved it, but would not watch it again. You've been warned.

  • This is a film that I'd call haunting. I liked it, but in the subsequent days and months after watching, I've thought about it so much that I started liking it even more. I still haven't been able to watch it again though.

  • I agree. I think about this movie constantly, and get nervous when the weather gets ominous haha.

  • You've inspired me to queue it up again. I've been told the book is amazing, so that may be the next step...

  • I read the book first (so pretentious, I know) and it made me love the movie more.

I also then heard an interview of Cormac McCarthy where he was once on the road with only his young son during the winter and stayed at a crappy motel. He woke up early and in watching his son (still sleeping), had a vision for the father–son bond that's the heart of this story.

Definitely hard to watch, but such great story telling that it almost transcends 'story' and months after leaves me feeling unsettled, pondering 'what if?'

  • I agree Dave. Cool backstory about Cormac McCarthy and his son. I definitely ponder the 'what if' often and this movie is the reason.

Would I teach my son how to put a gun in his mouth if captured? I don't know, and I hope I don't have to.

  • I watched it for a second time last night. This is one of the rare movies that was better the second time. (And the end still got to me.) I may have to raise my rating.

  • I was the wife and mom watching it. Definitely tough, and still haunting my thoughts.

  • I had a nightmare about this book/movie earlier this week.
