Red Tails 2012 ★★

Watched Jun 21, 2012

In typical Lucas fashion, "Red Tails" is style over substance. A very expensive and well produced WWII drama, "Red Tails" dramatizes the trials and tribulations of a group of African American fighter pilots.

Unfortunately, since we are dealing with a George Lucas film, what we get as an audience is some pretty good CGI dogfights and decent digital matte work, but that is about it. The characters are paper thin and simply characterizations, the acting is not great (especially Gooding Jr. and Howard), the story has no depth and is incredibly empty, and the direction is pretty static.

Couldn't we get a little back story? How about we find out why they were picked? How about we see what kind of training they had to go through? How about not characterizing the Nazis like they are straight out of a 1940s Bugs Bunny cartoon?
