A surprisingly faithful remake of ARMY OF DARKNESS. It's actually a lot of fun, and one of the Raimi-est of Raimi's more recent work.

The story feels like the results of a high speed collision between two drafts, but I enjoyed the hell out of this. The plot holes are papered over by charm, and most of that is attributable to the chemistry between McConaughey and Zahn.

The basic premise of white people saving the day in Africa is problematic, but I'm willing to give a goofy adventure film a pass on that.

Too bad it was such a financial disaster. I'd like some more (extremely loose) adaptations of shitty Clive Cussler novels.

Joe Johnston was a perfect fit for this, and I enjoyed it more on a second viewing. I initially felt that the action montage near the end was a poor substitute for a single good action scene, but for whatever reason it clicked for me this time.
