Top Ten (as of 12/11)

Not only is this list almost totally irrational, but it's also going to change in about two seconds. This is what it is at this very second (and in roughly the order I would put them in).

  • The Lord of the Rings Collection
  • Avatar
  • Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope
  • Fight Club
  • The Thing
  • The Shining
  • Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
  • Oldboy
  • Rear Window
  • Babe

  • I've been holding off on a top 10 — I think I have 25 on it right now. I don't know why I worry about these things, since these lists are always so nonsensical and ever-changing. But then again, no "Cable Guy"? And "Avatar" made it? Crazytown!

  • Shoot-- Yeah, Cable Guy! Well, it was off the top of my head, so I'm sure there are other amazing films missing. I gave myself about ten minutes. It was easier after slapping the date on the title and especially after listing the directors. (I know I missed a few there as well -- Herzog for instance).

I can't explain how much I truly like Avatar. I've seen it five times now (once on a 3D television) and it thrills me just the same every time: dumb, paint-by-numbers story and all.

  • Babe?!

  • Daryl brings up a good point — “Pig in the City” may be the better film in the Babe franchise. (And if I have to go with George Miller's finest, it might still be “Beyond Thunderdome.”)

  • A better film, perhaps, but "Babe" just strikes those cheesy feel good notes that make it special. I was shocked when I saw it and loved it so much... but it's probably just a "fun" choice rather than a "real" choice. I might supplant it with "Road Warrior" if I did the list today.

  • The last time I watched “Mad Max,” I liked it a little less (though, I still really enjoyed the last third). The last time I saw “Thunderdome,” I liked it almost as much as I ever have. Haven't seen “Road Warrior” in awhile.

  • You should watch it again. It's so good! Still! (Well, I haven't seen it in a few years... maybe I should watch it again too.)

  • Your number three is my number one on my top 25 list. Great titles here.

  • Thanks! The list has already shifted by a few notches, but these are all classics. Sometimes I do think Star Wars: A New Hope is the greatest film ever made, but I like to keep it interesting.

  • I don't think anything will ever be able to top A New Hope for me. Here's my top 25 if you're interested.
