Kurosawa is masterful in his use of quiet desperation. There is a raw, inherently human core hiding underneath polished overtones; one that takes after the film's namesake by unraveling with startlingly subtle form without losing momentum. It also features one of the strongest, most admirable female characters I've seen onscreen to date- or at least in my opinion anyway.
