Tarantino does a war film. OK, so it's just as unlikely - deliberately so - as most of the 40s and 50s war films that it appears to be drawing inspiration from... but it still has moments of genuine tension and excitement among the signature Tarantino gore.
Oh, and funny too.
Rather than try and update the premise, they've temporarily brought her brave, intelligent, hyper-resourceful but old-fashioned character to Los Angeles where a lot of laughs are generated as she interacts with her more modern peers.
There is of course a mystery; some bad guys; and ultimately a very happy ending. This could have been terribly dull and formulaic but in fact it's fresh and funny.
Recommended. This was actually a pretty good school holiday film to watch with the kids.
