Well, he's done it again - this is now my second favourite Tarantino film and it certainly bettered my already high expectations.

Firstly, I didn’t expect this to be funny at all, but I surprisingly found myself laughing throughout. Scenes such as an argument over a set of KKK masks are completely out of the blue and not at all expected, but they fit perfectly in to the setting that Tarantino has so masterfully created. I’m not usually a fan…

  • The Avengers 2012

    ★★★★★ Watched 27 Apr, 2012

Continuing on from the epic big-screen adventures from the Marvel comics that have already begun with Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger, Avengers Assemble has already grossed more in its first week than all of these Marvel films together in the same time period. And it’s not surprising really, as Marvel have done an amazing job of getting us ready and excited for this assemble. Most of us have seen at…

  • The Dark Knight Rises 2012

    ★★★★½ Watched 20 Jul, 2012

Whilst I found it a little boring at first (that's largely because of its 3 hour run time), after the first hour and a half it was absolutely epic. With many great additions to the cast including Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard, and of course Tom Hardy's excellent Bane, the cast is yet again a strong quality of Nolan's film. The score is amazing and is used perfectly in this instalment, and there were so many great surprises! It certainly…

  • Drive 2011

    ★★★★★ Watched 12 Oct, 2011

As my top film of 2011 and one of my favourites of all time, Drive is absolutely brilliant.

Violent scenes contrast with ones of pure passion to give us a film that is seductively brutal. Almost like a scene straight from Grand Theft Auto, only without the prostitutes, the film is full of roaring engines, sharp corner turns, and big guns. But it's not only the story line that gives off this feel, as scenes are complimented perfectly with an…

  • Skyfall 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 26 Feb, 2013 2

Whilst I enjoy Daniel Craig in the lead role of these latest films, nothing seems to be shifting my opinion that I just really don't like James Bond films - my Dad made me watch most of them when growing up so I've always attempted to give them a go, but I just can't seem to get into them.

Despite this, I found Skyfall to be watchable and even enjoyable in places, especially in its final half. Sam Mendes is…

  • Looper 2012

    ★★★★½ Watched 20 Oct, 2012

Oh boy, this was good. Looper has flown to the top of my favourite films this year as an all-round brilliant sci-fi that is exceptional on so many levels. With Johnson creating a brilliant dystopian future and futuristic setting, the whole look and feel of Looper is incredible. Not including too much technology to take the focus away from the story line, there are minimal changes to the setting which help to make the audience see this future as one…

  • Argo 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 10 Nov, 2012 1

First and foremost, Argo is an incredible directorial piece of work by Affleck, and it’s no surprise that he won so many awards for his accomplished efforts at this year’s award ceremonies. Affleck handles this true story amazingly, and creates quite the periodic thriller with everything from the music to the clothing coming together superbly. These aesthetics are constantly strong, and really compliment the story as it looks as realistic as it actually is.

Based on truth, the story is…

  • The Dark Knight 2008

    ★★★★★ Rewatched 16 Oct, 2012

My favourite instalment to Nolan's Batman trilogy, and that's largely because of Heath Ledger as The Joker. He's got to be one of the best superhero villains to date, and it undeniably Ledger at his best, which is sad with it being the last film he did. Nolan's first Batman film was fantastic but this is even better, I feel. The casting is a strong quality of Nolan's trilogy and it makes a surprising improvement here (Aaron Eackhart definitely deserves…

  • Inception 2010

    ★★★★½ Rewatched 08 Sep, 2012

Another fantastic Nolan film! It took me a couple of watches to fully understand this film but absolutely brilliant nonetheless. With an amazing plot and screenplay and incredible cinematography, this film is strong from start to end. Its best quality however, is its cast of brilliant actors - DiCaprio, Hardy and Levitt are brilliant male leads, and Marion Cotillard is absolutely stunning.

  • Silver Linings Playbook 2012

    ★★★★½ Watched 12 Jan, 2013

A completely lovely romantic dramedy and definitely THE best romance that 2012 had to offer. Both funny and emotionally honest, Silver Linings Playbook gives a heart-warming look at mental illness, without being patronising or throwing anything too serious in your face. SLP may be more romance than comedy but it’s not your typical boy-meets-girl. This film is about its two characters, both separately and as a couple. Whether they come together at the end or not never becomes the main…

  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 16 Dec, 2012

The Hobbit has a bit of everything you love about the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, and because of that it’s hard to fault.

Whilst I have to agree with a large part of the criticisms for this film in that it does fall short on story line in places, and that it is padded out by much walking and many, many chaotic chases, I don’t feel that the film ever felt slow or that it became tedious in its…

  • Prometheus 2012

    ★★★★½ Watched 01 Jun, 2012

Despite the negative reviews I read beforehand, I bloody loved it. Prometheus is a brilliant sci-fi that is full of suspense and the kind of horror that the Alien films are all good for. This film perfectly captures the terrifying atmosphere that the first two Alien films managed to create, and there were pretty decent visuals throughout. With strong acting from an excellent cast, this instalment reminded me very much of the original Alien film in that it had a…
