The Makeup Artists’ 30: My five favorite makeup or prosthetic designs from my six favorite makeup artists
As part four in a series celebrating filmmakers, here are my five favorite makeup/prosthetic designs or effects from my six favorite makeup artists. The films are ranked (within their respective rows); the artists are not.
Honorable mention: Ashton, Bottin, Chambers, Chaney, Freeborn, KNB, Leakey, Tuttle
Thanks, John!
My problem was narrowing this list down to five designers/artists. I may have to expand it soon.
Cool idea for a list!
Thanks, Richard.
Agreed, Adam. I know Rick Baker, at the least, consulted on "Hellboy," so Doug Jones is kind of represented here. Jones is a modern-day Karloff.
Totally forgot he was the Surfer! I think del Toro sits around thinking, "I wonder what wonderfully grotesque costume and I can squeeze Doug into today?"
Serkis! Yes! Now, I need to remember who did the makeup designs for LOTR and add them to my honorable mentions. Thanks for the reminder, Adam!
Richard Taylor is the individual name I was looking for, and, yes, Weta is amazing. The Uruk Hai design is one of my favorite creature designs ever.
On a side note, someone posted a picture online of Taylor at the Hobbit/Weta display at San Diego Comic-Con yesterday. 'Twas awesome.
I did not know that! Also, thanks for the FB tip. The bit above would make a great special feature on the Hobbit blu-ray.
Here's the link to the photo if you're interested, but you have to scroll down a ways. www.aintitcool.com/node/56942
Okay, AdamMcA, 11 days after talking about it, I've expanded this list to include Richard Taylor/Weta. The Uruk Hai designs must be celebrated!
