Quite right, too, Travis - it was a brilliant decade for those kinds of films. I'm fairly sure Them! and The Thing From Another World would be on my list if I did a 1950s top 10, too.
It's amazing that it actually doesn't look, to me anyway, as though it has aged all that badly in terms of its special effects. They must have been pretty amazing for their time. It's a great film.
I've got a 1950s sci-fi boxset around here somewhere that I still need to watch a few from - including the three you've listed. The Incredible Shrinking Man is another favourite.
I'd vote for practical, model ants over CGI anyday; so I know what you mean. I have a bunch of this stuff on VHS in a box somewhere. I really should list it. Let the rewatches begin!
Love both Them! and Incredible Shrinking Man. Them! surprised me at the Aliens similarities. Young girl, only survivor to unseen terror from the creatures at the start, is rescued but is initially mute out of shock. Definitely a proto-Newt. Reminded me of the influence always given to The Hidden Fortress on Star Wars.
Only seen 1......on the other hand, you're "missing" Witness for the Prosecution, Paths of Glory, Anatomy of a Murder, Rashomon, Wild Strawberries, Sweet Smell of Success, Hiroshima mon amour, In a Lonely Place, 7 Men From Now, The Naked Spur, The Asphalt Jungle and The Killing. And yes I'm only writing this to comfort myself....
Good list, definitely inspiring me to go and make a similar 50s list. Can't believe you don't have North by Northwest in here though!
Thanks!
"North by Northwest" may be an oversight in need of a rewatch.
Rear Window should be in this great list!
Ruy, "Rear Window" is represented here! It may rank as number 11 or 12 on an expanded 50s list.
And thanks for the compliment!
Seven Samurai? Touch of Evil? The Bridge on the River Kwai? :-( lol
I've never heard of those. Are they films? (I kid! I kid!)
Damn, I haven't seen any of these...I definitely need to watch older and classic films
Watch them all!
I see you have a thing for aliens. Of course they were popular in the '50s, but 1/3 of your list is Sci-Fi.
As you can tell, I've seen more '50s sci-fi than any other genre from that decade!

Definitely, Steve!
I would love to revisit "Them!" sometime soon. It's been far too long since I've seen it.

I'm definitely going to have to rewatch it now, Callan!
Ashamed to admit I've never seen The Incredible Shrinking Man...

Some films I've never seen!
Here's my crack at this list I did a few months ago, inspired by your list Travis:

I think Incredible Shrinking Man has a crack at your top 10 once you see it!
