Frances Ha 2013
Best comedy of the year this far. Perhaps my favorite movie of the year thus far. Undateable.

Star Trek Into Darkness 2013
Somehow manages to be dumber than the movie about meatheads racing cars. Highly illogical third act arrives quickly enough thanks to some good action set pieces, but the story is convoluted and doesn't go anywhere... just goofy jokes and big explosions. JJ Abrams will do just fine with Star Wars given George Lucas' track record if INTO DARKNESS is any indicator.
Oh, and Benedict Cumberbatch can do an excellent villain voice.

Fast & Furious 6 2013
The action is solid, but I just can't help but laugh at the preposterous scenes from jumping across highways or out of airplanes. I can only suspend disbelief so much. But the action is solid.

Room 237 2013
If “Room 237” has any redeeming quality, it’s in the fact it has softened the blow of learning that Hollywood plans on making a prequel to “The Shining.”
Does it matter that former “Walking Dead” and “The Shield” showrunner Glen Mazzara — a man who has demonstrated a knack for genre on the small screen — is behind the project? To a diehard fan of “The Shining” and Mazzara’s TV work such as myself, not a damn bit. You’d don’t…

The Iceman 2013
Being tight-lipped has saved the lives of many gangsters over the years.
But when you're making a movie about a true-crime killer such as Richard Kuklinski, a few details would be useful.
That's the main gripe you're likely to have with director Ariel Vromen's “The Iceman,” which otherwise has strong performances from well-cast actors, not the least of them is the Oscar-nominated and immensely talented Michael Shannon (“Boardwalk Empire,” “Take Shelter”) as the hulking Kuklinski – a man who stood… -
The Final Sacrifice 1990
Canadian MANNIX!

Upstream Color 2013
Continuing to find new layers to this film, although I wouldn't call them complexities. This film does reveal itself after a third or fourth viewing and becomes easier to interpret. Still among my favorite films of the year despite losing some of the mystery.
-
To the Wonder 2013
Finding less to like on repeat viewings, but still a strong film.
-
Sightseers 2012
Ben Wheatley has an even stronger outing than KILL LIST, thanks to the brilliant addition of comedy to his horror.
-
Berberian Sound Studio 2012
Not my cup of tea, not all that familiar with giallo... still has a great atmosphere to it.
-
Miami Connection 1987
I'm neither a motorcycle ninja nor Black American, but I love it.
-
Iron Man 3 2013
Just enough Shane Black-isms to keep me throughout, but still a big, dumb comic book superhero movie.
