Matt "Cinebro" Conti’s review:
**Part of the Best Picture Project**
I feel betrayed by Alexander's Ragtime Band. It's the first truly dull film I've seen since the dreadful 2nd Academy Awards year. In fact, so much of it reminds me of The Broadway Melody, probably the worst film to ever win Best Picture.
It brings out everything I hate about show business pictures, and magnifies them. While other films have managed to blend the show aspect of the films with some taut drama, this film absolutely fails at everything else. Not once did I care about anyone or anything happening in the film.
I think the worst part about this film is that it seems like it had potential. It has a soundtrack set to Irving Berlin songs, and if you look hard enough, there's some subtext about the impact popularity has on artistic integrity. But the film never really seems to come to life, and instead we're stuck with a dull and unfilled romantic story. There'll be a show, then a brief dramatic interlude, then another show, and it just repeats in a vicious and nauseating cycle.
I can only give this two stars for the Irving Berlin songs and the show numbers which are a bit fun, but the rest is terrible.
