TSPDT's List of 1000 Greatest Films
A really extensive and great list of They Shoot Pictures Don't They?'s 1000 great films. It's one of the best essentials lists to check out, and since I couldn't find it anywhere on this site, I decided I'd post it here for people to get a look at it.
The list is compiled and voted upon by 2,161 critics, filmmakers, reviewers, scholars, and other film types.
The following list is the 2012 edition.
Note: Some films are either not listed, or listed multiple times (especially the shorts) so I can't add them. Therefore, the number is slightly less than what's included on the full list. You can download it from the website located here.

Awesome.
You might want to change #792 (Körkarlen) to The Phantom Carriage though (it's a duplicate entry in the database, but The Phantom Carriage has cover art and everyone seems to be "watching" that entry).
Yeah, there were bound to be mistakes when I was assembling this together, but for the most part, I'd say 98% of this list is accurate.
Thanks for the feedback.
Boy...somebody hates animation.
Who made this list? At least 3 of the worst movies I've ever seen are on it.
There's some animation on there. Although I am disappointed by the lack of Bakshi and Laloux.
As for the list, the summary says it itself. It's the ultimate combination of every major film poll from the ballots of nearly every esteemed film list ever (although a lot of it is likely to change next year with the introduction of the new Sight and Sound poll). I believe they used the Borda count based on each ballot's order of preference. Each ballot was made by someone with an influential/important opinion on cinema, so I'd say that while I don't agree with some films on the list, I can understand their place.
If this list isn't enough for you, there's always the starting list of 9,954 films which includes every film to be featured on all of the ballots.
Enjoy.
Hey Cinebro, do you have a list of the fims that you couldn't add to the list by any chance?
I do not have a list of them readily available, however if you give me some time (2 days at the most) I can go through the original list and find the missing ones from memory.
Or you can just check out the full list either here. or www.icheckmovies.com/lists/they+shoot+pictures+dont+they/
You don't have to go to all that trouble, I was just curious!
Besides TSPDT will have to revise this whole thing with the new Sight & Sound results soon (which I assume will shake it up a fair bit) so there's not much point.
It's okay! I have really good memory so I could just go through and remember which ones I couldn't put in. I'm just tired now so I'm not going to do it, and I'm relatively busy tomorrow as well.
Also, they only update every January so the list is still solid for the rest of the year.
Well if you insist!
Excellent work, Cinebro. Will look more closely tomorrow. I'll never make it through them all though....
Cinebro -- FYI, you've got the wrong L'Argent at #230; it should be Bresson's 1983 film.
You've got the wrong The Dead at #375, it should be the 1987 one by John Huston.
The 2013 list is due out any day now.
Damn. Gonna take me 3 days to assemble the 2013 list.
In my opinion TSPDT puts out the definitive greatest films list and I've been visting their site for a few years now. Can't wait for the 2013 version.
I think that while they end up missing multiple films one might find essential, but it is definitive, and at least they always post the list of EVERY film that was counted (which is posted in a link somewhere in the comments here).
That is a lot of work, Cinebro. Thanks for doing it.
I sense a great disturbance in the force, as if Cinebro suddenly cried out in terror... www.theyshootpictures.com/gf1000.htm
@pileofcrowns ohhh fuuuuuck it's here, new layout, and Harakiri and Das Boot are back.
Eh. I think it'll take me less time this year.
