Not as good as I remembered but still pretty good, Hill's muscular thriller crackles with racial tension. There are some exciting set pieces and a great bad guy. The films look and it's politics have dated considerably but the excellent soundtrack and cinematography in a stunning San Francisco hold up brilliantly.

With films like this and Contagion maybe it is time for Soderbergh to take a break from filmmaking for awhile. Side Effects begins well with a fine opening 30 minutes setting a really unsettling tone and pace.
In its second act the joins of the narrative begin to show. By the third act we are in freefall as the film goes off the rails. The ending is The Usual Suspects by way of Scooby Doo. This is convoluted nonsense and…
You would be forgiven for thinking that a new Terrence Malick film was not coming to the cinemas in a week such is the general lack of excitement. Solondz works his old magic for 2/3s then blows it in the final act. A real pity as there is a lot to admire in this film. Jordan Gelber as Abe is a superbly dark comic creation, all arrested development. I will always watch a Solondz film but this one did not quite live up to expectations.
