The Place Beyond the Pines 2013
We all first took notice of Derek Cianfrance back when his fantastic debut feature film ‘Blue Valentine’ premiered in 2010, and it is safe to say that the majority of us have all be waiting to see what he had in store for us next. ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ was that project and this sophomore film far from disappoints.
‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ is an extremely ambitious movie. The story is split into three acts, each bringing on…

Pickpocket 1959
Pickpocket is not pulpy enough to be a noir, too sleepy to be a thriller and not interesting enough to be an effective drama. It creeps along at a lengthy 76 minutes with some skillful cinematography during a few clever pickpocket montages that pop with overtly sexual energy, but largely sits lifeless on the screen. The attempts at philosophical exploration through the simple story are particularly ineffective. A handful of snappy pickpocket montages are the highlight in an otherwise spiritless film.

Argo 2012
Argo, the true life story you couldn’t make up, was always ripe for the Hollywood treatment and for the most part Affleck and co. do a good job of bringing it to the screen. Most should be familiar with the plot by now but if not it revolves around a CIA operation to get American diplomats out of Iran during the revolution. Their cover is an audacious and implausible recce scouting for film locations for a crappy space opera movie.…

Stoker 2013
I’ve noticed a recent personal trend of being out of step with public and critical opinion. It’s certainly not a case of becoming contrarian or even more difficult to please in my old age but I am finding it harder to enjoy some modern films in the way so many other people clearly are. Unfortunately, Chan-wook Park’s Stoker is another one to add to this growing list of recent disappointments.
Maybe my contrasting view this time around is a little…

Evil Dead 2013
First off....THANK YOU!!!!!
Secondly, I will say that I am quite the fan of horror movies. I, like many horror fans, eagerly await through all of the crap in hopes of a special gem, and whenever those special gems come along, I tend to overreact, so I am going to say ahead of time that my score is definitely a little biased, but I do understand that this movie is not perfect, and I actually do have some problems with… -
Mysterious Skin 2004
What a truly distressing film. The subject matter of Mysterious Skin is absolutely terrible and, at a few points, nearly unwatchable. With that being said, it does deal with its dark themes in a surprisingly humane manner, more concerned with sympathizing for its characters than sensationalizing the material. Also, this is, hands down, the best performance from Joseph Gordon-Levitt I have ever seen. It's hard for me to fully enjoy such a deeply afflicting film, but I can really appreciate it for carrying its own unique representation of childhood trauma and its long-lasting effects on the human soul.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower 2012
The acting performances in The Perks of Being a Wallflower (particularly from Emma Watson and Ezra Miller) are stupendous. With that being said, I was particularly annoyed with much of the writing, which came off to me as corny or contrived. The character development really bothered me as well. These individuals have these problems, traumas, and unfortunate circumstance that are a part of their lives, yet the film makes no effort to develop from them. They are mentioned, and then…

Cosmopolis 2012
I liked this movie but I am really not sure why.
-I hardly understood a thing
-All of the characters spoke to each other like they were speaking to an object, not a human.
- Things fell together a little too perfectly. Someone that just so happened to be looking for Eric Packer (Pattinson) would just so happen to be at the street corner he was on (always). The man that is trying to kill him just so happens to…
