  • Chronicle 2012

    ★★★½ Watched 02 Mar, 2013

Someone (or perhaps more than one someone) recommended this film to me at random a couple of months back and I'm having a hard time recalling who it was (pretty sure it was one of my many English counterparts). I think it was brought up to me because it takes place in western Washington, where I am originally from.

When I started it, I had the wrong thing entirely in mind. I apparently associate the word "chronicle" with the Chronicles…

  • Shame 2011

    ★★★★½ Watched 15 Jan, 2012 1

The perfect mood--dark, reality-based, raw, and emotional. The character development is unparalleled. This is filmmaking at its finest.

The film is seemingly an attempt to show what real sex addiction would look like--if such a thing exists. There is no gloss, no pleasure, and no feeling of satisfaction in Brandon's life. He is plagued and haunted by the addiction twenty four hours a day. He cannot maintain normal relationships with anyone in his life, including his own sister.

    The obsession…

  • Melancholia 2011

    ★★★★½ Watched 24 Apr, 2012

Lars Von Trier has very plainly cornered the market on dark and ominous storytelling.

For me, Melancholia came with a lot of hype, and thus, pre-conceptions. People told me it was on the depressing side, but a must-see nonetheless. Being a fan of Von Trier's prior films, I was anxious to give it the attention it deserved, and so reserved it in my "Important Films" list (which is strictly limited to things I want to take very seriously). Even as…

  • Magic Mike 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 11 Feb, 2013

As I write this review, I've literally just finished watching Magic Mike. Wow. I'm actually reeling from the experience and I had to get some basic thoughts down before the feeling leaves. I'm genuinely blown away by the film.

First off, somehow I didn't have a clue it was a Soderbergh film. As the film got into it I started to suspect that it must have been done by an accomplished director. I undoubtedly gave the film far too little…

  • Submarine 2011

    ★★★★½ Watched 20 May, 2012

I actually kind of fucking loved this film.

    The thing is...
It's quite simple to find a film that tries to be funny, quirky, and original but that falls short in all three. This film does try to be those things but it actually works. I'm a fan of nuanced anything in films, probably because so few achieve it. Submarine catches you off guard with jokes where you wouldn't expect them. So well-written, well-shot, well-acted it's a wonder we've not seen another full-length feature from director Ayoade before.

Includes a good list of reasons one might need to consider sleeping with someone.

  • A Good Day to Die Hard 2013

    Watched 09 Mar, 2013

Seriously? I'm only giving it one star because I had some good laughs at a lot of the action scenes. Guy falling out of a window with crazy "WTFBBQ!?" face? Yes please.

  • Indie Game: The Movie 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 01 Jan, 2013

A rather personal look at the life of several independent game makers, Indie Game had me in tears more than once. If you are even casually interested in video games, see this film.

  • Take This Waltz 2012

    ★★★★ Watched 05 Dec, 2012

Like the tide sweeping back to the sea, Take This Waltz follows the marriage of a long-time pair of 20-somethings as they come to terms with the loss of love.

The film portrays a lonely and desperate Margot (Michelle Williams) in all threads of emotion. We follow her through boredom, surprise, confusion, hurt, and elation. Williams' performance is, as expected, pitch perfect.

The film is beautifully shot with the best use of natural light I've seen in years. There are…

  • This Means War 2012

    ★★½ Watched 08 Jun, 2012

I was surprised by the fact that I liked this at all.

It certainly falls into the category of a standard rom-com. The plot isn't believable and they didn't try to make it even kind of plausible that the two main characters are legitimate professional "spies." That entire part of the story was completely phony in an obnoxious way.

For me there were quite a few moments of genuine laughter. I think Pine and Hardy (and the dynamic they share)…
